General

LVL — Permissible Hole Locations
LVL — Permissible Hole Locations

Holes only in the middle third of span and middle third of beam depth. No holes in cantilevers.

  • 3-1/2" beam depth — max hole diameter 3/4"
  • 5-1/2" beam depth — max hole diameter 1-1/8"
  • 7-1/4" beam depth — max hole diameter 1-1/2"
  • Deeper beams — max hole diameter 2"
  • Minimum horizontal spacing between holes = 2x the diameter of the largest hole
  • Maximum 3 holes per span; holes should not be cut in cantilevers

Cutting technique

Holes may be cut in PKI joist webs for wiring, plumbing, and mechanical systems without reducing floor depth — location, size, and spacing must comply with Table 5 and the rules below.

  • Distance from support to hole center must comply with Table 5 (varies by joist depth, series, and hole diameter — confirm exact values per project)
  • I-joist top and bottom flanges must NEVER be cut, notched, or otherwise modified
  • Center field-cut holes on the web; max hole size = clear flange-to-flange distance minus 1/4", keeping a minimum 1/8" gap to either flange
  • Square/rectangular hole sides must not exceed 3/4 of the max round hole diameter allowed at that location; multiple holes require spacing of at least 2x the largest hole's diameter
  • Holes 1-1/2" or smaller are permitted anywhere in the web, including cantilevers; limit 3 maximum-size holes per span
  • Cut with a sharp saw — never over-cut the web. For rectangular holes, drill a 1"-diameter hole at each corner first, then cut between them to avoid stress cracks
PKI — Double Joist Installation
PKI — Double Joist Installation

Taiga TechNote IJ09-108. Applies to PKI20 and PKI40 uniformly loaded joist members only.

  • Subfloor sheathing fastened per local code — ensure both flanges are fastened
  • No packing required between joists
  • Not applicable to girder members — see PKI installation guide instead
  • Subfloor joint must fall on the centerline of a single joist
  • Use 2" nails to attach subfloor to joist @ 6" o.c.
Parallel Wall Blocking — I-Joist
Parallel Wall Blocking — I-Joist

Use screws and glue at the locations shown for a squeak-free installation.

  • #8 x 2" screws at both flanges, adhesive at the web-to-block location
  • Block extension matches distance between face of web and face of flange of the I-joist being attached to
Parallel Wall Blocking — SCL
Parallel Wall Blocking — SCL

Same detail as the I-joist version, sized for SCL blocking.

  • #8 x 2-1/2" screws at both flanges (longer than the I-joist version), adhesive at the web-to-block location
  • Block extension matches distance between face of web and face of flange
  • O/C spacing as per plan
Mid-Span Blocking
Mid-Span Blocking

Use screws and glue at the locations shown to ensure a squeak-free installation.

  • #8 x 2" screws at both flanges, adhesive at the web-to-block location
  • Block extension matches distance between face of web and face of flange of the I-joist being attached to
  • Attaches to I-joist, rimboard, or SCL blocking
Scarf Cut Joist
Scarf Cut Joist

For angles greater than 60° from perpendicular. Factored loads not to exceed 2,400 lbs.

  • Simpson SDW22500 x5 structural screw
  • Simpson LS70 field-skewable reinforcing angle
  • 12" filler block each side, sized to joist type and depth

Loads not to exceed 2,400 lbs (factored).

  • Simpson SDW22500 x3 structural screw
  • Simpson L90 reinforcing angle at the corner
Cantilever Eave Detail

1/4" SCL shear blocking at the eave.

  • Beveled bearing plate required when slope exceeds 1/4" per foot
  • For RIS joists: attach joist to plate with a twist strap and backer block

Structural Fascia Detail — LSL / Nailed

1-1/2" x D" LSL fascia. Use nails and glue at the locations shown for a solid structural connection.

  • 2x4 web stiffener on one side of joist
  • 3" (10d) and 2" (6d) common nails
  • 1-1/4" rim for blocking, V-notch for ventilation if required
Structural Fascia Detail — LVL / Screwed
Structural Fascia Detail — LVL / Screwed

1-3/4" x 11-7/8" LVL fascia. Use screws and glue at the locations shown for a solid structural connection.

  • 2x4 web stiffener on each side of joist (both sides, vs. one side for the LSL/nailed version)
  • "U2" #10 x 3-1/2" universal screws
  • 1-1/4" rim for blocking with V-notch for ventilation
